Subject Info

Bathed in the early morning sunshine of an autumn day, Eilean Donan Castle sits majestically on its small island in Loch Duich, providing one if the most memorable and most romantic sights along the road to the Isle of Skye (visible in the distance). With the sea providing a natural moat, its narrow bridge was the only connection with the mainland, and the castle was easily defended from attack until the coming of gunpowder and cannon, which sounded the death-knell for many a fortress. In the early 20th century, the castle was faithfully restored based on original plans and has become one of the most-photographed castles in Scotland.

Image Info

Tech Talk: Photographed with a Nikon F801 35mm camera with Nikkor 28mm wide-angle lens with polarising filter, mounted on a Benbo tripod used as a monopod; taken at 1/30th second at f4 on Fujichrome Velvia film at ISO 50 and processed normally.

Location: Lochalsh, Scotland, on the road to Skye.

Notes: Early morning oblique sunlight in mid-October. Polarising filter used to darken sky and enhance colours of foliage (by reducing shine on leaves).

Comments: Taken from on top of gate parapet for higher viewpoint, no room to spread tripod legs. Early morning for better light and fewer tourists(!). Several days spent in area, waiting for high tides at right time(s) of day for photographs taken from various angles.
